SKYACTIV-X - Mazda's revolutionary new engine

SKYACTIV-X is the revolutionary petrol engine from Mazda that offers the best of both worlds - diesel efficiency in a petrol engine.  This clever system works using Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI), which compresses a lean mix of air and fuel.

Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other cars tested to the same technical procedures.  These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load.  There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures. The CO2 figures shown however, are based on the outgoing test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration.

FAQ SKYACTIV-X

How does it work?

SKYACTIV-X employs Mazda's patented Spark Control Compression Ignition (SPCCI). This involves using an extremely lean mix of air and fuel, which is compressed to an extremely high pressure. A spark then ignites a very small, dense amount of fuel, pushing up the heat and pressure in the cylinder. This extra pressure ignites the remaining fuel (like in a diesel engine). By burning the fuel more quickly and more completely, SKYACTIV-X offers you better performance with fewer emissions than a conventional engine.

How can it be more economical AND produce more power?

The increased air-to-petrol ratio means that SKYACTIV-X is able to less fuel while producing the same, or better power. Less fuel means a more economical engine, without the loss of power.

Do I need to change how I drive to get the most out of SKYACTIV-X?

Not at all! SKYACITV-X has been designed for real-world driving, not just to perform in the lab. It will mainly run in SPCCI mode for maximum efficiency, but when you need an extra bit of power it will switch seamlessly to the traditional spark ignition mode.
